Bertha Lucille Soil, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Kansas City, Missouri on August 24, 2025. She was born August 6,1939 in Athens, Alabama to the late Rev. Willie Brown and Cora Mae Horton.
Her family migrated to the Kansas City area from Alabama. She and her husband John moved the family to Shreveport, Louisiana in the early seventies where they remained for several years. The family moved back to Kansas City where they spent the remainder of the their days. During her work life, Bertha spent many years caring for patients as a Private Duty Nurse. She loved to care for others and spent most of her life sharing her love and light with her patients and all she came in contact with. She also spent many years alongside her husband running their grocery store Help & Go. She and her husband John also purchased real estate in the greater KC area.
Bertha was the loving devoted wife of the late John Soil for sixty-six years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Her family spans five generations. Her legacy of love and laughter will be carried on by all who loved her.
Bertha and John both loved the Lord. They became members of New Hope Baptist Church in 1962. Bertha served New Hope as a Deaconess, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Mission President, Mother Board President and Benevolent Fund Administrator. She loved worshipping and attending Wednesday night bible study. Her faithful endurance earned her a heavenly reward.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Willie Brown (Mable Brown) and Cora Mae Horton, her husband, John H. Soil, one (1) son Aaron Jackson Jr., two (2) grandchildren Wendell Guinn and Angel Hooper, three (3) sisters, Katherine Hayes, Barbara Shaw and Evenlyn Pickett, and one (1) brother Joe Malone.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories five (5) daughters Brenda (Lovie) Adger, Marie Guinn, Alfreda (Ralph) Tabron, Valerie Soil and Cynthia (Will) Newson. Two sons, Jeffrey Jackson and Tommie Patterson. Three (3) sisters Essie Love, Dorothy Gordan, and Costella Malone Collins. Two (2) brothers Julius Brown and Larry Malone. Three godchildren, Dale Walker Jr., RemyDi Greathouse, and Jalayah Ingram. Two adopted daughters Pat Thompson and Alice Parker, and long-time special friend Dec. Sylvester Jackson Sr. She has many extended beloved family members residing in Alabama, Louisiana, and Kansas City. She also has a host of dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends not mentioned by name but never forgotten.
To all our guests, the immediate family only will go to the burial site. Upon their return, we invite you to a repass to share a meal and continue to celebrate the life and legacy and Bertha L. Soil. Your Presence would be a great comfort to our family during this difficult time.
