Dean A. Sutherland, 86, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025. He was born March 13, 1939 in Raytown, Missouri to the late Lonnie and Esther Lee (Cole) Sutherland. After graduating from Raytown High School in 1957, he attended the University of Kansas where he studied architecture and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
Dean was a third-generation carpenter and made a career as a builder and housing developer where he headed the creation of many of Kansas City’s neighborhoods. A loving husband and father, Dean enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America and spent many summers with his sons on various camping adventures. Dean was also active in other organizations including the Ararat Shriners where he was elected president of the Scooter Corps, he was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, and he served in the Army Reserve.
He and his wife Angie were married for 36 years and were regulars in the Kansas City social scene where they were often found at local jazz and country music performances. Dean and Angie were well traveled and were fond of the Caribbean, Florida, and Mexico.
Dean was an avid motorcyclist and boater. Weekends were frequently spent at the family residence at Lake Lotawana or on his vintage cabin cruiser at the Lake of the Ozarks. For several weeks of each August, Dean ventured to South Dakota with many of his closest friends for the Sturgis bike rally and to experience the beauty of the Black Hills.
Dean is survived by his sons Ryan and Nick Sutherland and his stepdaughter Lisa Blacksmith. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dean is preceded in death by his wife Eula Angie Sutherland, who died earlier this month. He is also preceded in death by his aunt Francis Chandler, stepdaughter Sonja Dale, and stepson Toby Pragman.
A gathering of friends and family is being planned on September 27, 2025 at his and Angie’s home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
