Obituary

Donna Mae Eskew was born August 30, 1946, Omaha, NE to Ervin and Mildred (Girmus) Odvody. She was raised on a farm near Milligan, NE where she developed a strong work ethic and close ties to her community. Donna attended Milligan public school, where she played the cornet and trombone in the band, participated in sports, was a cheerleader, and graduated in 1964 at the age of 17.

After graduating from high school, Donna moved to Lincoln where she began working in mail advertising. It was in Lincoln that she met her future husband, Larry Barrett. The two later married and built a life together, welcoming two children, Rick and Renee.

Donna devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother while also working part-time and creating a daycare in her home, caring not only for her own children but for many others as well. Her passion for helping children and families extended into the community. She served as a Boy Scout leader, helped charter a 4-H troop and was deeply involved in the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served in numerous roles over the years.

Always willing to serve, Donna volunteered regularly preparing and serving meals for Wednesday night suppers and cooking and serving for St. Mary’s Food Kitchen. She was known for her readiness to help anyone in need – offering rides, taking friends to doctors’ appointments, grocery shopping, or lending support in any way she could.

Above all else, Donna treasured time with her family. She found her greatest joy in being with her grandchildren – watching them, playing with them, attending their sporting events. She also loved playing games and dancing. One of her greatest blessings was the opportunity to meet her great-granddaughter, Kassie Jo Barrett.

Donna is lovingly survived by her son, Rick Barrett (Angela Seidel); her daughter Renee (Dan) Haug; three grandchildren, Mike (Taylor) Barrett, Katy Haug and James Haug; and her great-granddaughter, Kassie Jo Barrett. She is also survived by her nieces Monica Parris, Jennifer (Greg) Burback, Annette Odvody, and Tracey Odvody, along with many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Mildred Odvody; her brother, Leonard Odvody; and her niece, Pamela Odvody.

Donna will be lovingly remembered for her kindness, generosity, unwavering faith, and deep love for her family, friends, and community.

The family would like to thank Ascend Hospice for their care and dedication.
