It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, Doreen Axon (nee Franz). Doreen passed peacefully at home on September 2, 2025.
Doreen was born and raised in North Kansas City, MO and graduated from the University of Missouri, Kansas City with a dual major in psychology and sociology. After spending a few years in Indiana and Illinois, Doreen returned to the Kansas City area where she settled in Overland Park, KS. It was there that she raised her family and worked to establish and grow a family accounting and software consulting firm with her former husband, Steven Axon. Doreen served as the office manager for more than 12 years. Following the firm’s sale, Doreen worked at the Tivol jewelry store in Kansas City for 23 years. Doreen found a great deal of love and support at Unity Church of Overland Park and spent much of her free time with this caring community. Upon her retirement, Doreen moved to Colorado Springs, CO where she reveled in taking an active role in her grandson, Aaron’s life.
Doreen was one of the most kind and thoughtful people most will ever know. She spent her whole life caring for those around her, especially her family and friends. Her sense of humor may have been understated but was always present. Doreen rarely thought of herself, preferring to put others first. Even in the most trying of circumstances, Doreen remained unfailingly positive and upbeat.
The family would like to express our profound gratitude to all at Palisades at Broadmoor Park for taking such loving care of Doreen these last few years and to her team at Abode Hospice and Home Health for supporting her and our family during this difficult transition.
Doreen is survived by her son, Michael Axon (Maureen) of New Canaan, CT, her daughter, Jennifer Lange (Mark) of Colorado Springs, CO, her five treasured grandchildren: Samantha Axon of Carmel, IN, Alexis Axon of San Mateo, CA, Matthew Axon of Bloomington, IN and New Canaan, CT, Ryan Axon of Madison, WI and New Canaan, CT and Aaron Lange of Colorado Springs, CO as well as her sister, Jonell Maple (Tom) of Lake Las Vegas, NV. She is predeceased by her parents, Paul and Thora Franz.
Although our hearts are heavy, we take solace in the knowledge that Doreen improved the lives of all she met with her kindness, compassion and unfailingly positive outlook. We will miss her dearly.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, October 4th at Unity Church of Overland Park, 10000 Marshall Dr., Lenexa KS. Internment to follow immediately at Park Lawn Cemetery, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., Kansas City.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in Doreen’s memory to Unity Church of Overland Park would be greatly appreciated.
