Eleanor Dorothea Williams entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Her passing was unexpected, yet her life lives on as a beautiful testimony of faith, love, and steadfast commitment to those she cherished.
Eleanor was born on October 9, 1933, in Harrisonville, Missouri, to Wallace B. and Edith Greene. She was the youngest of three children. Her older siblings, Dorothea “Dolly’ Greene and Ralph Lewis Greene both passed away at an early age, leaving her to grow up as an only child. Those losses deeply shaped her, and later in life, the bond she formed with Gordon’s siblings became especially meaningful.
As a young girl, Eleanor traveled with her mother all over the country. They visited all 50 states and their capitals. They settled in Greenwood, MO and she attended Greenwood Public School and Pleasant Hill High School, where she played basketball and softball. She graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1951 and went on to earn her degree in Education with a specialty in Home Economics from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, MO in 1955. During her college years, Eleanor met the love of her life, Gordon George Williams, Jr. They were married on September 5, 1953, at the Greenwood Presbyterian Church, just before Gordon entered the U.S. Army. Shortly thereafter, he was sent overseas to serve his country in the Korean War, while Eleanor remained at home, carrying both her studies and their young marriage forward. When Gordon returned, they moved to Kearney where Eleanor taught school. She was known as being an excellent cook, entertainer and educator. They moved to Liberty five years later, where they joyfully continued their life together, a lifelong partnership grounded in love, faith, deep friendship, and a shared spirit of adventure
Together, Eleanor and Gordon raised three children—Claudea, Darren, and Amy, who were the pride and joy of their lives. Although Eleanor began her career as a Home Economics teacher in the Kearney School District, where she taught for five years, her heart was always with her family, and she soon made the decision to devote herself fully to being a stay-at-home wife and mother; creating a home filled with love, encouragement, and support.
Eleanor had an incredible way of making everyone feel important, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader, always rooting them on, whether she was sitting in the stands, attending a recital/game/competition, or watching from afar. Nothing made her happier than seeing her family succeed, try something new, or simply show up and do their best. The cherished time she spent with her family created so much joy in her life.
She also found great happiness in her lifelong friendships, trips and social events. She loved being on the go and was always ready for the next adventure. Eleanor never hesitated when a vacation was mentioned—if there was a chance to travel with family or friends, she was all in. She and Gordon shared many wonderful journeys around the world, enjoying summer camping in the Ozarks, winter snow skiing in Colorado, scuba diving in Mexico, and exploring new places with dear friends. Some of their most treasured memories were made at their home at the Lake of the Ozarks, where summers and weekends were filled with laughter, time with family and countless gatherings with friends and neighbors. The lake was a special place where memories were made and stories were born!
Eleanor lived a life marked by quiet service and enduring commitment. She was a devoted member of Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Chapter DT for 53 years, serving as past president and other leadership roles, and continually giving back in meaningful ways. She was actively involved with Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts of America leadership, Red Hat Society, and other charitable organizations. Participating in social clubs and volunteering for organizations like Meals on Wheels kept Eleanor engaged in her friendships and in her community. Her faith was a steady and guiding presence throughout her life, reflected in her 65 years of membership at Liberty United Methodist Church, which she lovingly considered her spiritual home.
Eleanor will be remembered for her warmth, her adventurous spirit, and, above all, her deep and abiding love for her family. She had a rare ability to make people feel supported, encouraged, and genuinely cherished. Her legacy lives on through the generations she loved so fiercely and the countless lives she touched simply by being herself.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister. She is survived by her beloved husband of 73 years, Gordon Williams, daughter Claudea Williams, son Darren Williams (Linda) and daughter Amy Hillemann (Steve). Eleanor’s greatest joy was watching her grandchildren and great- grandchildren grow. She was a loving grandmother to her grandson Eric Williams (Micheline), and great-granddaughter Emmalyn Williams and great-grandson Ryker Williams, granddaughter Ellie Williams-Thomas (Ivory) and great-grandson Kash Williams, granddaughter Brooke Lambert (Luke), great-grandsons Beau and Knox Lambert and great-granddaughter Ella Lambert, and granddaughters Logan, Regan and Jaden Hillemann. In addition, she is survived by many close relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations in her memory to the following: Liberty United Methodist Church or P.E.O. Chapter DT Scholarship fund.
