Gregory Scott Carnes
March 30, 1957 – June 24, 2025
Gregory Scott Carnes passed away peacefully from ALS on June 24, 2025, in his home, surrounded by the people who loved him most. Born on March 30, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, Greg lived a life full of joy, music, and unconditional love.
He was the proud father of two daughters, Reagan Stafford and Rachel Carnes; beloved father-in-law to Dustin Stafford; and a cherished part of life to Rachel’s longtime partner of ten years, Dylan Bestgen. He is also survived by his sister, Linda McCambridge and brother-in-law Jim McCambridge; his brothers, Bradley and Douglas Carnes and sister-in-law Janice Carnes; and his faithful dog Murphy, his constant companion and sidekick. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Rosenberg and Kenneth Carnes.
Greg was truly one-of-a-kind. The funniest, most entertaining person in any room, he had an unmatched gift for making people laugh and feel at ease. He loved to sing, dance, and crack jokes — and he never missed an opportunity to get others to join in the fun. At every event, you could count on Greg to be the first on the dance floor and the last one off.
He was a lover of movies, golf, old Westerns, 70s disco and R&B, and above all, time spent with family. His deep bond with his daughters was the heart of his world. And wherever Greg went, Murphy was right there with him — riding shotgun in his yellow hummer, just like always.
Greg was a ladies’ man, a storyteller, a music lover, and a Crown Royal connoisseur. He lived big, laughed loud, and gave selflessly. He had a rare ability to talk to anyone and make them feel like they’d known him forever. He taught others not to take life too seriously — to laugh often, love hard, and dance when the music plays.
He was the best dad, friend, brother, and soul. His absence leaves a hole that can never be filled, but his spirit lives on in every laugh, every story, and every song played just a little too loud.
A memorial will be held at the Arrowhead Yacht Club in Lake Winnebago, Missouri on Sunday, June 29th starting at 2 PM, please feel welcome to stay for a celebration of life afterward. Please consider making a donation to the ALS Association.
