Jane Elizabeth Elliott was born on November 3, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, and died peacefully on March 7, 2024, in St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 94.
She was the daughter of Dr. Joseph Frederick and Ann Elizabeth Fox. Her early years were spent on The Paseo Boulevard in Kansas City. She told many stories of riding her bicycle up and down Paseo, walking to Blenheim school, and days in the park. Her sister Joan Louise joined the family in 1935.
In the summer of 1941, the Fox’s moved to their new home and farm on Old Stagecoach Road north of Kansas City. The hundred-acre farm would include horses, many dogs, chickens, one pet pig, a barn, a cottage, a pond, and a lake. She loved the animals, the outdoors, and the parties when the city folk came for weekends. Ann Elizabeth Fox, “Bess” (or Mammar to the kids), was a wonderful cook and hostess.
Jane attended Barry School near the farm and then North Kansas City High School, graduating in 1947. She was a very good student and a member of the National Honor Society. After high school she attended Lindenwood College for two years, a radio school, and then began a brief career managing a radio station in Mexico, Missouri. She returned to her roots in Kansas City working in her father’s Optometric practice. She then went on to model for the Patricia Stevens Agency in Kansas City working with various dress designers. All the while, she kept taking dance lessons. She loved to dance, especially tap.
She treasured art and loved to paint. Later she would study interior design and spent ten years as a personal interior decorator for the Jones Store Co. She was very successful and loved her creative work.
Across the road from the farm lived the Williams family, and Mrs. Williams was an Elliott daughter. She always told Jane about her youngest brother, Kenny. Years later, after the War, they met. Jane married the young lawyer and Air Force officer Robert Kenneth Elliott on October 17, 1953, in Kansas City. They were married until his death in September of 2008. She was a homemaker, mother, neighbor, gardener, community volunteer, and Kenny’s activity director. After his retirement they travelled to Europe and the Americas, spent time in Florida, and loved the role of grandparents. His legal and military careers took them to many events in Kansas City and across the country, and Jane was always the belle of the ball.
Jane was Christian, always and earnestly seeking to follow Jesus. Though they relocated several times and wintered in Florida she always attended local churches, bible studies and Christian organizations throughout her life. Even as a young child on The Paseo, she would walk herself to church.
Together they had three children, Lisa Karen Elliott (Rick Gibbons, Denver, Colorado), Stuart Enlow Elliott (Liberty, Missouri), and Joseph Welch Elliott (Marlene, St. Joseph, Missouri). Jane has four grandchildren, Peter Gibbons (Kate Cash), Logan Gibbons, Audrey Elliott Dimmel, and Katelin Porter (Clay). Jane has eight great-grandchildren, Andrew Gibbons, Henry Gibbons, Solomon Dimmel, Ada Jane Elizabeth Dimmel, Clyde Dimmel, Charlie Porter, and Levi Porter. Her great-granddaughter Aurea Elenore Dimmel left us in 2014 and is welcoming Jane to heaven.
She and Kenneth had many, many nieces and nephews. They were all lights in her life.
Jane has had numerous caregivers in the last several years, and they have been saints. Thank you to each one.
