Janice Lee Sloan, 100, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., Kansas City, MO, 64138.
One of five children, Janice was born on July 13, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Gustavus Vasa and Hattie Mae Johnson. She graduated from high school when she was 16 and moved by herself to Kansas City, Mo., where she found work at Safeway and later at the Bendix ammunition plant. Janice was introduced by a coworker to her husband of 60 years, Kendrick (Casey) Sloan. They married and eventually settled down in Kansas City, Mo., in the Santa Fe Hills neighborhood where they lived and raised their children before retiring to Eldorado Springs, Mo.
Janice deeply loved and cherished her large family. It was her greatest pride and joy. She loved to laugh, hold babies and was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. Janice kept a notebook with the name and birthday of every child, grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great grandchild, of whom she was extremely proud. She also had a passion for reading. Janice said she could “get lost in a book for hours and stay up way past her bedtime.”
She wasn’t afraid of aging. Janice took everything in stride and it was her drive and determination to keep moving and changing with the times that drove her longevity. She was on Facebook, texted with her friends and loved ones and kept us all in check. Janice was a wealth of information, often remembering dates, events and family news more accurately than those much younger than herself. She was sharp as a tack and liked to look her best for company, hair, nails and all. Janice had recently celebrated her 100th birthday on July 12, 2025, surrounded by generations of her family, holding court as only a true matriarch can. She really was the best of all of us.
Janice is survived by her daughter Kendra Nichols, her sons Greg Sloan (Debbie) and Mark Sloan (Lisa), her grandchildren Daniel Peters, John Nichols (Heather), David Peters, Brian Nichols, Sarah Fellwock (Bart), Grant Nichols III (Janel), Michael Sloan, Brian Sloan (Lorie), Tara Painter (David), Kevin Sloan (Ashley), Laura Reese, Anna Lee (L.T.), Kyle Sloan (Maxie), April Elalee (Mike), Wade Mullin (Amber), Mitchell Sloan (Alaina), Nick Sloan (Rachel), Jeremy Sloan, Ryan Sloan, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Janice was greeted in heaven by both of her parents, her husband, her brothers Dick, Bob, Jerry and Kenny Johnson, sons Stephen and Randall Sloan, granddaughters Melissa and Sandra Sloan, and her son-in-law Grant Nichols II.
