Obituary

Jeffery "Jeff" Harris, 64, passed away on July 1st, 2026. Jeff was born on May 16th, 1962, in Kansas City, MO, to Joan and Lester Harris. He graduated from Hickman Mills High School in 1980. He then went straight to working in the county jail until he could go through the police academy. It was his dream from an early age to become a police officer. Jeff spent his time working up the ranks until finally becoming sergeant of the Kansas City Police Department. He retired from the police department after sustaining an injury on the job and went on to be an investigator for Missouri Gas Energy (MGE) until his eventual retirement from there as well. Jeff loved to share stories of his time as a police officer, often revisiting his favorite “funny moments,” and passing on to those most important to him the meaningful lessons he learned during the most impactful moments of his career.

His children remember him as a funny, kind, patient, loving father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams. Above all, they will remember his comforting words and fatherly advice, which will continue to guide them through the rest of their lives. Jeff enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching any action or horror movies, and playing games with his family, such as Uno and Monopoly. He was a sports connoisseur, enjoying all kinds of sports, but prided himself specifically on being the Chiefs’ number 1 fan. He was a witty individual who loved a good “dad joke” and was passionate about keeping humor in every situation.

Jeff is preceded in death by his father, Lester Harris. He is survived by his mother, Joan Harris; children, Emily Harris, Danielle Harris, and Brandon Harris; siblings, LeaAnn Evans and Jana Gates; and grandchildren, Abbey Wilson, Carson Harris, and Rilee Harris.

His celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, July 25th at Park Lawn Funeral Home from 1- 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jeff's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Cancer Action KC, a foundation that many Kansas City metro locals can get assistance from while fighting cancer. They help many people who are seeking treatment at Sarah B. Canon Cancer Institute, just as Jeff did. They assist families in many ways, including providing resources and funding for patients’ mental wellbeing to help support a positive cancer journey, which was a very important aspect of Jeff’s own cancer journey. Donations can be made by going to their direct website, canceractionkc.org. It would be very appreciated if you donated in memory of Jeff.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Sarah B. Canon Cancer Institute, but specifically Dr. Toumeh and his nurse coordinator, Ellen, for their efforts, care, and dedication to his well-being through his journey with his cancer diagnosis.
