Obituary

Marcella D. McWhorter passed away on April 15, 2026. Marcella was born December 28, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to Cecil & Cecil Davis (yes, her mom and her dad’s name were both Cecil). Her mother passed when she was a child and her father remarried, Marge raised Marcella and her siblings as her own. Marcella and Martin were married in 1957, and celebrated 59 years of loving marriage before Martin passed in 2017. Marcella and Martin were inseparable. They had three daughters; Kathy, Peggy & Margie. She was always a loving and caring mother who would do anything for her girls.

Marcella & Martin worked alongside each other running McWhorter Construction for many years. Afterward she was also a cosmetologist and realtor, then worked for ten long years with the IRS. She eventually found her position at GSA and retired after 15 years there.

In her younger years, Marcella was an avid bowler, competing for many years in local tournaments. She was former President and Secretary of the Women’s Bowling League & even taught bowling.

Marcella had a kind heart and was always generous with her time. She volunteered with the Southside Soroptimist Club where she filled many board positions including Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President. Marcella & her husband were always side by side and dedicated to volunteering at the community events including the fishing derby’s; Senior Christmas Breakfast/Secret Santa, & easter egg hunts. Marcella truly enjoyed giving back and helped organize many events focused on children & community. She enjoyed helping with the Bike Safety events as well as delivering dictionaries and backpacks filled with school supplies to local schools.

Marcella enjoyed spending time in her garden, traveling out West & to Vegas (in her former years) with her husband and parents. She enjoyed playing and working at Bingo with friends and family, and she found joy relaxing on her patio surrounded by her rescue cats. She loved feeding & tending to the neighborhood cats. Marcella had a fun sense of humor and was always willing to listen without judgement but also had strong sense of self & a BS detector like no other. She was a loving mother, grandma, and great grandma who was always up for whatever we threw at her. She appreciated the kindness of her caring neighbors & community.

Marcella was predeceased by her parents Cecil & Marge Davis; sister Billy Joe; husband Martin; and her eldest daughter Kathy Stephens. She is survived by her children Peggy Kornis & Margie Hollingsworth; her brother Leonard Davis; her grandchildren: Bobbie Jo; Joe, Alecia, Theresa, George, Kyle, Max & Will; and several great grandchildren. We are comforted knowing she is side by side with Martin and her family in Heaven.
