Margaret Louise Merryman

           Margaret Louise (Smothermon) Merryman, 92, a former longtime resident of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2023, at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit where she resided the past five years.

          Margaret was born September 22, 1930, in Mulberry, KS, the youngest of three children of Lewis and Margaret Mae (Provan) Smothermon.  She graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City.  Margaret was united in marriage to Robert D. “Bob” Merryman on August 22, 1948, and they were blessed with one son, Randy. 

          Margaret was a longtime member of Maywood Baptist Church in Independence. She was also a member of Independence Young Matrons, the Women’s City Club, the Question Club, and was active with Bob in his many Ararat Shrine activities. 

          Along with her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bob; her sister, Maxine Thomas Mueller; her brother, Donald Smothermon; two nephews, a niece, and a grandson, Jonathan Schnepp.   

          Survivors include her son, Randy Merryman (Nancy); grandson, Taylor Merryman and his children, Boyce, Mikelyn, and Beckham Merryman; granddaughter, Kelly Tovar (Mark) and her children, Lorien and Natalie Frey, and Eliana Tovar; as well as a niece, other family members and friends.

          Margaret’s funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 14, at Maywood Baptist Church, 10505 East Winner Road, Independence, MO 64052. Burial will follow in Mount Washington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Maywood Baptist Church.
