Margery Ann Herbert (nee Albers), born in Chicago Illinois on July 21, 1944, passed away at the age of 80 on January 2, 2025 in Kansas City Missouri.
Margery, aka “Pinky” was a beloved wife to Paul Herbert for 58 wonderful years, an amazing mother to Lorraine Cowger and Matthew Herbert, mother-in-law to Scott and Marissa, and a doting “Nanny” to Jordan, Tyson and Makinley. Margery also leaves behind her younger sister, Linda Anderson, brother-in-law Charles, her younger brother Martin Albers, sister-in-law Lyn, brother-in-law Thomas Herbert, nephews and nieces Jeffrey, Nathan, Kari, Katie and Kristina. For Margery, family came first. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. It was important to her to keep up with her siblings, her cousins and her two Godsons.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, George and Alice Albers (nee Mundt), sister-in-law Karen Herbert, and nephew Jim Herbert.
Margery graduated from Lutheran High School Central in St. Louis Missouri. From a very young age she knew she wanted to care for others. She discovered nursing as her true vocation and completed her professional training at Deaconess College of Nursing in St. Louis. She worked as a registered nurse for almost 40 years at Deaconess Hospital, Parma Hospital in Ohio and Mercy Hospital in west St. Louis County.
Margery cared for all types of patients, including post-surgical women’s health and kidney transplant patients. She was very passionate about the care she gave and was instrumental in organizing a nurse’s union in St. Louis, with the goal of improving nurse/patient ratios and patient outcomes. In 1997, Margery was honored by the Missouri Nurse’s Association for her “Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Practices”.
Margery’s father was a parochial educator, a church organist and choir director. Because of his love for music, she developed a deep appreciation for the hymnody of the church and choral music. From grade school through adulthood Margery sang in choirs including the St. Louis Lutheran Children’s Choir and various church choirs where she worshipped.
In 2005, Paul and Margery retired just outside of Kansas City, Missouri to a property where Paul could pursue the outdoor activities he enjoyed, and Margery could enjoy the quiet peaceful views and engage in her favorite pastime of bird-watching.
Margery’s deep and abiding faith was grounded in her Savior, Jesus Christ. She worshipped at King of Kings Lutheran Church, where her life will be honored on January 24, 2025. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 AM at King of Kings (1701 NE 96th Street Kansas City MO 64155) with the Celebration of Margery’s Life beginning at 11:00am.
In honor of Margery and in memory of her great-nephew Bryce Anderson, please consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
