Obituary

Marilyn Jean Maddick, 91, of Kearney, Missouri, passed away on January 29, 2026, at home.

Marilyn was born April 18, 1934, in Minlo, Iowa, the second of four children of Miles and Dorothy (Burnham) Gibson. She grew up in Guthrie County, Iowa, and attended school in Linden, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Gary E. Maddick on July 27, 1952, and they were blessed with three sons, James, Joseph, and Jay.

Following Jim’s birth, Marilyn and Gary moved to Maryville, Missouri, where he attended college, and she worked as a telephone operator. They later lived in Columbia, Missouri where Gary would complete college. Finally, they moved to Clay County where they welcomed Joe and Jay to their family. Motherhood was first and foremost Marilyn’s most important vocation. They would eventually settle on property near Holt, Missouri. Following Gary’s untimely death in 1990, Marilyn moved to Kearney, Missouri.

Marilyn loved working outdoors, tending her flock of sheep, gardening and canning vegetables, and keeping her big yard. She was an accomplished seamstress, often creating her own clothing as well as her boys’. She also served many years alongside Gary at Ararat Shrine Temple.

Along with her parents and husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her brothers, Lloyd, Leonard, and Larry.

Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jennifer, Joe and Cami, Jay and Carol; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren with a ninth due in April; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a service celebrating Marilyn’s life at 11:00 am, on Saturday, February 7, at Lathrop Methodist Church, Lathrop, Missouri. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Holt, Missouri.
