Marjorie Betty West, 92, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She will be missed immensely.
Betty was born on November 11, 1933, in Arkansas City, Kansas, to Louis and Bessie Ward. She spent her first few years in Oklahoma on the Chickasaw National Reservation. When she was a young child, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she lived the remainder of her life. She welcomed eight children: Robert (Diane), Linda, Debbi (Larry), Sue (Mark), Donna (Russell), Dan (Kari), Kathy, and Lori (Mike).
Betty was united in marriage to Harvey Lee West, and through their marriage she was blessed with his three children: Paula, Harvey Gene, and LaDeena (Brion). Together, Betty and Harvey traveled throughout the country in their motorhome and spent their summers at the Lake of the Ozarks, where they made their second home and enjoyed countless hours of boating, fishing, and hosting family and friends. Harvey preceded her in death on June 12 of this year.
Betty worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company and the Kansas City, Missouri School District before joining her husband at Harvey L. West Bookkeeping and Income Tax. She made many lifelong friends at the lake and through the tax business.
Her proudest title was Grandma and G-Mom. She loved spending the holidays with her family and was the family’s proud photographer. She created hundreds of photo albums that her children still enjoy looking through. All of her pictures were developed from film, and she took great pride in dropping it off and picking it up to see what she had captured. Betty also loved collecting Mickey Mouse and Precious Moments figurines, which she proudly displayed in her glass cabinets.
Betty was always up for an adventure, whether it was taking a cruise or traveling to New York, California, Florida, and Texas to visit family and friends. She also loved cruising all 50 states in the motorhome. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren compete in sports and spent countless hours in the bleachers—through heat, cold, and rain—cheering them on. As she slowed down, she loved sitting at the kitchen table watching the hummingbirds and trying to keep the squirrels away from her bird feeders. Her family was her pride and joy, and her spunky personality and spark will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her children, 23 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Roberta; her brothers, Alfred, Dwight, and Lewis; her infant son, Virgil; her sons-in-law, Kevin Colby, Bill Stevens, and Santo Fiumano; and her grandchildren, James Stevens and Beth Ann Backues.
Funeral services will be held on December 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Susan G. Komen to assist with breast cancer research.
