We lost an extraordinary mother, meemaw, sister, aunt and friend when Martha Young, 92, passed away in hospice care after a short illness on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Marty was born on October 15, 1933, in Kansas City to parents Clarence Herriman and Alma Abrams Herriman. She was the younger sister to brother Jack Herriman, who gave her the affectionate nickname ‘Moose.’ Marty graduated from Paseo High School in 1951. That year, she married the love of her life, Larry Young, and they were united for 72 years until he went to heaven in 2024. Larry and Marty were blessed with two children, Craig and Donna.
Marty’s career spanned various positions, including corporate and human resources, at Sears, Arthur Anderson, McDonald’s and the IRS.
She was known for her quick wit, zest for life and caring for others. Marty delighted in hosting celebrations for family and friends, earning her another nickname, ‘Party Marty.’ Homes in Raytown, Lee’s Summit and Independence were filled with good times, music and food. She and Larry were often out and about at card games, square dances or events for the organizations they joined and led. If a Chiefs or Royals game was on, Marty was cheering for them, decked out in a jersey, virgin Cosmopolitan in hand. She also enjoyed movies and music shows.
Marty happily gave significant time and energy alongside Larry to Chapter 91 of the Experimental Aircraft Association where they connected with pilots across the country over several home-built planes and years of shared service. She was also a member of the Kansas City Callers Association, the American Legion and the Missouri Pilots Association.
Her lifelong involvement in Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority (Kappa Theta Chapter) where she was a perennial officer was close to her heart, and she received numerous chapter awards for her contributions. Marty valued her membership in the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, attending when she could and tuning in on television regularly. She especially enjoyed the wonderful music played at these services.
Marty leaves her brother, Jack Herriman; children, Craig Young (Shaun) and Donna Hankins Kormann (Scott); grandsons, Steve Hankins (Kim) and Jeff Hankins; great grandchildren Christian and Ava; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends that she loved deeply.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, January 26, 2026, at Resurrection Church in Lee’s Summit (350 MO-150) with visitation at 1pm and a service at 2pm. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery (Park Lawn) in Kansas City.
Memorial contributions may be made to the EAA Chapter 91 Hedrick Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2751 NE Douglas St., Lee’s Summit, MO 64064.
