Nelcie Gordon was born in Ackerman, Mississippi on December 19, 1925 to Cornelius & Costella Miller. She was the youngest of five girls, all who preceded her in death.
She came up in a household filled with family love. She was named “Sweetie” by the family who were hard working southerners who hailed from the state of Mississippi. She was encouraged to work hard in order to succeed in life. As a small child she spent time visiting her mother’s sister, Fannie Dell & uncle Budd in Alabama who encouraged her to attend college following high school.
She graduated from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi and during the summer she went to Atlantic City, N.J. to work. She enjoyed sharing stories of her college days when she along with other students traveled to the big city to work. Nelcie was the first in her family to receive a college education and her family was proud of her achievement.
Nelcie moved to Detroit and continued her education at Wayne State University, Lewis Business College and Detroit Institute of Technology.
Nelcie worked at the Main Post Office where she met and married Charles Gordon. To them one son was born, Kevin Gordon.
It was not unusual for her nieces and nephews to receive boxes filled with presents at Christmastime. That box of gifts included cash in the pockets of the clothing.
Nelcie assisted her mother in raising her niece Minnie Winters and nephews Donnie & Herbert Fair who relocated from Earle Arkansas to Detroit Michigan following the death of her sister, Elaine Winters in October 1956.
She worked for Wayne County General Hospital and was named Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year. She was later promoted to Supervisor before the hospital closed. Her next job was at the City County Building, where she remained until her retirement in 1989.
She traveled yearly from Detroit Michigan to Earle Arkansas where she would join others family in celebration of Thanksgiving in the home of her Aunt Zenobia Childress. She would also help to cook the entire meal.
Nelcie enjoyed a long relationship with her oldest sister, Willie Ceil Culp and relocated to Kansas City, Missouri 1998. She joined Victorious Life Church and attended church faithfully.
She leaves to morn her loss one son Kevin Gordon, nephew Herbert (Bridgette) Fair of Detroit, Michigan. Cousin JoeAnn (J.C.) McCottrell of Chicago, Illinois, niece Minerva (Gilbert) Warner, nephew Bobby (Gloria) Culp, of Kansas City, Missouri and a host of other relatives and friends.
