Olga G. (née Degranou) Maragos, 89, of Athens, Greece and Prairie Village, KS passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Olga was born on February 26, 1936, in Piraeus, Greece. Olga’s parents, Stavros and Margarita (Gioulekas) Degranou, were among the more than one million Greek Orthodox natives of Asia Minor who fled to mainland Greece during the Hellenic Genocide of the early 20th century.
On August 19, 1959, Olga married her childhood sweetheart Dr. George D. Maragos. George and Olga emigrated to Omaha, Nebraska where George taught and practiced pediatric medicine. Olga was a devoted wife and mother who nurtured her two children, Demetrios and Stavros, in a home environment with boundless love and support. Olga obtained an advanced degree in Art History from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, an accomplishment in which she took great pride.
Olga is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. George D. Maragos; her sister Efstratia (Effie) and brother-in-law George Kaniaris. Ο θεός να αναπαύσει τις ψυχές τους... may God rest their souls.
Olga was exceptionally active, volunteering at the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece and supporting numerous other philanthropic and cultural organizations. Olga had many friends and traveled extensively, pursuing a lifelong passion for art, music, opera, and culture.
Olga is survived by her sons Drs. Demetrios (Amy) Maragos and Dr. Stavros (Cynthia) Maragos.
Grandchildren Anna, George, Alexandros (Alexi), Sophia Olga, and Spyridon, her Goddaughter and niece Margarita (Paul) Paterson and nephew Steve (Angela) Kaniaris; great-nephew Elias, and great-nieces Georgia and Mia.
Services for Olga will be held Monday, October 6, 2025 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 12001 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. The funeral service will follow from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
In time, internment will follow at the A’ Cemetery of Athens, to rest alongside her departed and loving husband George.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Olga's memory may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Kansas City, Missouri or the Benaki Museum of Athens, Greece.
