Oliver Jacob Duvall (“Ollie”), age 88, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on September 22, 2025, at Centerpoint Hospital in Independence.
Ollie was born on August 25, 1937, in Nevada, Missouri to Bertha and Oliver Duvall. He was raised in Kansas City, the sixth of nine children. Life in such a big family taught him patience, generosity, and loyalty—qualities he carried throughout his life. He stayed close to his siblings with family reunions, Christmas gatherings, and travels together well into their 80s. He is survived by two siblings: sister Dorothy Boring of Camdenton, Missouri, and brother Robert Duvall (Judy) of Kearney, Missouri.
Ollie left school after the 8th grade to help provide for his family, but his sharp mind and practical talents carried him far. Gifted in math, mechanics, and business, he founded Custom Sheet Metal on Troost Avenue in Kansas City and ran it successfully for many years. After selling the company to United Heating, Plumbing and Cooling, he never truly retired—spending years mentoring and supporting their technicians. In recognition of his dedication, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Company.
Ollie was a man of few words, but his favorites were “I love you” and “wanna go fishing?” Patient by nature, he could sit for hours tying a hook or waiting on a bite, happy just to be by the water. At the bowling alley, he made his mark with several perfect 300 games. When he wasn’t at the lanes or near the water, you might find him with binoculars in hand, happily birdwatching. Ollie was principled, honest, kind, and had a quiet sense of humor that could surprise you when you least expected it.
Ollie is survived by daughters Debra Ruth (Geno) of Independence, Missouri, and Dianna Duvall of Blue Springs, Missouri; and grandchildren Derra Echols (Quincy) of Independence, Missouri; Carly Duvall Le Riche (Jeff) of Prairie Village, Kansas; Ann Hathhorn (Jon) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Dustin Duvall of Tucson, Arizona. He also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; his son, Donald; his parents, Bertha and Oliver; his brothers Paul, Carl, and Martin; his sisters Mary, Ruth, and Christina; and his granddaughter, Dena.
A visitation and funeral service will be held on September 26 at 9:00 a.m., and 10:00 a.m. respectively, at Park Lawn Funeral Home followed by interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, 8251 Hillcrest Rd, Kansas City, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation in Ollie’s memory.
