Pat Ann Cox

February 23, 1943 — August 16, 2023

Kansas City Northland

Patricia Ann (Van Horn) Cox, 80, of the Kansas City Northland, passed away August 16, 2023, at North Kansas City Hospital with family at her side.

Pat was born February 23, 1943, in Kansas City, MO, the second of five children of Jerry and Grace (Andrews) Van Horn. She graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1961.  Pat was united in marriage to Douglas M. Cox on November 30, 1963, and they were blessed with two children, Lisa and Skip.

Along with her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerry Van Horn II, Don Van Horn, Margie Tornabene and Mary Standley.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Doug; children, Lisa Cox and Skip Cox (Angel); grandchildren, Kenzy Martin (Travis), Kelsey Cox and Zac Cox; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends, including her daily coffee group at McDonald’s and the Sherwood Dining Club.

Patty touched so many lives! From the annual Snake Day Irish parades, to the years of tailgates over many sports, to trips to Arizona to visit family, to the family/neighborhood dinners, to the numerous parties, to countless sports and activities she attended for Skip and Lisa, and then everything for Kenzy, Kelsey and Zac. She was in the middle of it all and wanted to be a part of everything.

She was also an excellent cook and taught her grandkids how to cook and bake just like her. Her meals were legendary, even hosting a Thanksgiving dinner in lot N43 before a Chiefs game in one of the coldest tailgates ever. She taught the kids how to swim (really well!), do different art projects and even how to sew. They had an annual tradition of preparing all the desserts together prior to every Thanksgiving meal.

Her last day was a special one because she got to go to coffee with dad and her friends at McDonald’s and had lunch with her lifetime Sherwood friends. She was then surrounded by her family in the last minutes, just as she would have wanted.

Through it all, she demonstrated the importance of family and friends, welcoming everyone whether related or not.
