Rev. James L. Blair

Rev. James L. Blair, a devoted pastor, respected community leader, and cherished family man, passed away on May 10, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born on September 4, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Rev. Joseph and Clara (nee: Stovall) Blair. Rev. James Blair’s life was defined by his steadfast commitment to faith, education, and service.

Rev. Blair's early years were marked by academic excellence, graduating from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He pursued higher education with vigor, earning his bachelors degree from the University of Kansas, and subsequently a masters degree from Butler University. His scholastic achievements laid a strong foundation for his lifelong dedication to ministry and education.

In the late 1950s, Rev. Blair married Vida Shirley, with whom he shared over six decades of partnership. The couple relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1964, where they raised three children: two sons, James L. Blair, Darren L. Blair and a daughter, Monica L. Blair-Conway (Rev. Kevin T. Conway Sr.).

Rev. Blair dedicated much of his professional life to serving as a pastor at several Christian and Presbyterian churches. He was widely recognized for his warm, welcoming demeanor and his innate ability to make others feel at ease. His pastoral care was characterized by compassion, wisdom, and a deep commitment to his congregation's spiritual growth.

Beyond his calling, Rev. Blair was a man of diverse interests. He was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoyed walking, and found pleasure in reading and engaging with puzzles. His pastimes reflected his thoughtful and reflective nature. What he treasured most was spending quality time with his family, creating lasting memories that his loved ones will hold dear.

Revered by his community and beloved by his family, Rev. Blair was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Joseph L. Blair; his mother, Clara Blair; and four siblings—two sisters and two brothers. His legacy endures through his surviving wife, Vida Blair; his two sons, James Blair Jr. and Darren Blair; his daughter, Monica Blair-Conway; and son-in-law, Kevin T. Conway Sr; and his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other extended family.

Services honoring Rev. James L. Blair will be held at Park Lawn Funeral Homes, 8251 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City, MO 64138, on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m., interment will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery. 

Rev. James L. Blair's life of devotion, leadership, and love leaves a profound impact on all who had the privilege to know him. His memory will remain a guiding light for his family, friends, and community.
