Richard Layne Phillips

January 19, 1964 — September 2, 2023

Lake Lotawana, Missouri

Richard Layne Phillips, age 59, passed away in Grandview MO due to a tragic accident on September 2, 2023.

He was born in Kansas City MO at Baptist Medical Center on January 19, 1964. His professions included sole proprietor of Phillips Remodeling and a former Metro bus driver. His hobbies were boating and fishing. He was a die hard Chiefs football fan. Most of all he enjoyed his large family along with his large cat “Boots”.

Richard was a strong, loving father who was always there when you needed him and give the best hugs. He ended every thought with the phrase “You know what I mean?” His gracious and thoughtful personality was followed up by orneriness and stubbornness. To know Richard was to know that he would give you the shirt off his back. Ricks approach in life was “If there’s a will, there’s a way.”

He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Phillips; mother, Joyce Phillips; brother, Earl Phillips and stepson Randy Simmons.

Richard leaves behind a large family that includes all of the following:
Significant other Jeanette Gobely Simmons, their daughter Jennifer Phillips (Fiancee Jacob Myers) and stepson Joseph Simmons (Andrea Simmons). Richards son, Richard Wayne Phillips (Alma Aviles Phillips), daughter Ericka Phillips Murff (Ryan Murff). Their beloved siblings Amanda Brown Jones (Rob Jones) and Kristina Chapman VanAlst (Nicholas VanAlst) and their mother Aseneath Ross Stevens (Patrick Stevens). There are many nieces and nephews along with an accumulative of 19 grandchildren. His brother Larry Phillips (Kathy Pratt), sister Sheryl Phillips Wilhelm (Dick Wilhelm) and sister Lynda Phillips Conway (Danny Landsdown). Jeanette’s mom Judy Venable Gobely and her dad Howard Gobely (Sandra Gobely), her brother Ron Gobely (Sigrid Rogers Gobely) and his children, her sister Shelly Gobely Martin (Donnie Martin) and their children.
