Stephen “Steve” Ray Hook, a beloved father, grandfather and friend passed away February 5, 2026.
Born on May 25, 1957 in Kansas City, Steve was the only child of Ray Crews Hook and Janet “Kay” (Hurst). He was raised in Liberty by his mother Kay and grandmother, Eleanor Hurst.
Steve’s career as a Liberty Missouri Fire Fighter spanned more than two decades. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter before moving up in the ranks and serving as Reformed Local Fire Union 2709 President in 1982. Steve also owned and operated Greenside Up, a business that supplied sod and erosion control services all over the Kansas City metro area. He continued his career as a Public Safety Officer at Park University until his retirement in 2015.
Steve touched the lives of many – as a young man he was an Eagle Scout, a Scout Troop Leader, and worked at Clay County group home.
His favorite pastime was sailing at the lake with his friends and family.
Family was the most important part of Steve’s life he was proud father to Christy Turner (husband Lee), Courtney Ross (husband Jay) and was delighted by his grandson, Oliver James Ross.
Steve had a quick wit and great sense of humor. He made friends easily and was always the one to stick up for the underdog, or offer help to those in need.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ray Crews Hook and Janet Kay (Hurst) Chrane. He is survived by his children, his grandson and his stepfather (Frank J. Chrane).
Steve’s memory will be celebrated with a visitation at Park Lawn Funeral Home in Liberty, MO on Thursday February 12, 2026 from 4pm-6pm. He will later be laid to rest privately at Glenridge Cemetery by his family.
The family appreciates all the love and support as they honor his memory. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions can be made to SAFE - Surviving spouse And Family Endowment Fund, A program of the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission, 412 W. 8th St., Suite 202, Kansas City, MO 64105.
Steve’s legacy is one of hard work, family, and laughter.
