Obituary

Steven “Steve” Young, 76, of Kearney, Missouri, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026, at Liberty Hospital, Liberty, MO.

Steve was born on January 14, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri, to John and Naomi (Brown) Young. Following his graduation from high school in 1968, he answered a call to serve his community by entering the Kansas City Missouri Fire Academy. He began his career at Station 18, serving at various stations across the city before retiring in 2000 from Station 3 as a Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO). Steve’s commitment to his fellow firefighters extended beyond the station walls; he served for many years as an executive board member for the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 42, advocating for the brotherhood he loved.

Outside of his career, Steve was a man of many passions and talents. He was a gifted woodworker, creating ink pens from a variety of distinct woods. He was also a deeply knowledgeable American history buff, with a particular fascination for the Civil War and World War II eras, he enjoyed traveling to historic battlefields to stand where history was.

Steve had a lifelong love for classic automobiles and car restoration. Over the years, he proudly restored three Pontiac GTOs and a rare 1929 Pontiac Oakland, winning numerous awards at the Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI) car shows. Of all his projects, his absolute favorite was the time spent restoring his red 1969 GTO convertible side-by-side with his grandson.

On September 1, 1990, Steve married the love of his life, Simone Bourne, in Las Vegas. Together, they shared a beautiful life filled with adventure, traveling the globe and creating unforgettable memories on cruises. Steve was a doting, deeply devoted grandfather who cherished every moment spent hanging out and sharing life with his grandchildren.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, John and Naomi Young; his sister, Patricia Veach; his brother, James A. Young; and his beloved daughter, Amy Elizabeth Young.

His memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife, Simone, who survives of the home; his children, Stevie Young and his wife Bobette, and Anna Rene’ Suter and her husband Jamie; his five adored grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan, Bridget, Shawn, and Chantelle; and his two precious great-grandchildren, Baylie and Levi.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, 1640 State Route 291 Highway, Liberty, MO 64068.
