Virgil Adolph Gornowicz

January 9, 1944 — November 18, 2023

Kansas City

Virgil Adolph Gornowicz passed in peace at home on November 18, 2023, at the age of 79. In his final days, he was loved, supported, and surrounded by family and friends.

Virgil was born on January 9, 1944, in Bay City, Michigan. He grew up with a love for sports and the outdoors in Angleton, Texas. After graduating high school, Virgil went on to study at North Texas State where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. In 1963 in Beaumont, Texas, he met the light of his life, Genease Ann Smith, at an ice cream social. The two soon married and the adventurous couple moved to the Kansas City area where they raised their two children, Blake and Leslie. Virgil went on to be the founding member in Superior Color Graphics. He enjoyed cycling and participated in cycling events, including the MS-150 and Century rides.

Aside from spending quality time with his family and friends, Virgil enjoyed the theater, musical events, travel, wineries, crossword puzzles and spending time working in his yard. He was a deeply spiritual man who actively served in various capacities as a member of the Church of the Resurrection congregation. There is no doubt that God was delighted when Virgil entered his gates and Virgil felt instantly comforted by his Lord.

Virgil is survived by his son, Blake Gornowicz and wife Molly; daughter Leslie Reid-Hammen and husband Jim; grandchildren, Madison Sanders and husband Bret; Payton Reid and wife Dakota; and Hudson Gornowicz; great-grandchildren Owen, Drew and Jack Sanders. He is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Betty Gornowicz; sister, Barbara Foster; wife, Genease Gornowicz; and son-in-law, Kreg Reid. The depth of Virgil’s kind and generous spirit will be missed by all.
